Women Praying for Women was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 2001 by three Christian women: Katherine Spaht, Martha Elkin and State Senator Sharon Weston Broome, serving at that time in the House of Representatives. Mrs. Spaht, a law professor at LSU and author of the Covenant Marriage Law, approached Mrs. Elkin, women’s Bible study teacher and prayer leader at her church, and Senator Broome, an advocate for marriages and children in the legislature, about starting an inter-denominational group for women in the city of Baton Rouge for the purpose of strengthening the roles of women as wives and mothers through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and prayer. As author of the Louisiana Covenant Marriage Law, Mrs. Spaht saw the increasing number of divorces occurring among society today and the affect it was having on the family. It was her desire to see these statistics change. As the three women came together in prayer, Women Praying for Women was formed. The group decided to meet in local churches throughout the city twice yearly with guest speakers sharing on Christian topics related to women. The meetings were held on Saturday mornings so working women could attend. The meeting started with an opening prayer, music, speakers and ended with prayer groups led by committee members. After meeting in different denominations throughout the city for four years, the decision was made to change the meetings to a Saturday morning breakfast at a country club. The women enjoy the Christian fellowship that is felt around the breakfast table before starting the meeting with music, a speaker and prayer.

The format for the prayer time is to pray first for marriages and the family, secondly, the nation and our leaders and thirdly for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the women in attendance. As women on the committee saw the needs of the women attending, monthly prayer coffees with a speaker and time for prayer groups were started in 2005. This group meets in a room at a local restaurant so they can share a meal together afterwards. Bible studies in the home were also added in 2005. A day retreat was offered in 2005 and 2006, and an overnight retreat was held in 2007. Retreats continue to be an option for WPFW. The founders of WPFW have had the privilege of seeing many lives change through prayer and women attending the WPFW events have seen the power of prayer in their lives. The key verse for WPFW is James 5:16b, “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
